Motorola cable modem routers come equipped with a default Network Name (SSID) and Wi-Fi Password (Wireless Security Key). They are printed on the label on the bottom of the cable modem router. Network Names start with MOTO. The Wireless Security Key/Password is ten random lower-case alphabetical characters, [e.g. zyxwvfedca]. If you have a dual band cable modem router (e.g. the MG7540 and MG7550), there will be two Network Names. The two Network Names share the same Wireless Security Key/Password.
If you want to change the Network Name and Wireless Security Key/Password, please follow these steps:
- Make sure the device you are using for this process is connected to the cable modem router via Ethernet cable or WiFi.
- Open a browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc).
- In the address bar, type 192.168.0.1 and press Enter.
- There should be a blue page that says Welcome to Your Motorola Cable Modem.
Click on Login
- You should see the page titled Basic Status and Settings. Scroll down to the tab Wi-Fi Privacy Settings.
- Change the Network Name and Wireless Security Key/Password here. Click Save.
Network Name can be from 6 - 32 characters long. You can use the upper and lower case letters (a – z and A – Z), numbers (0 - 9) and special characters (e.g. $_/& etc.) except the single quote '
Wireless Security Key/Password can be from 8 - 63 characters long. You can use upper and lower case letters (a – z and A – Z), numbers (0 - 9) and special characters (e.g. $_/& etc.) except the single quote '
On the MG7315, there are separate Save buttons for the Network Name and the Wireless Security Key/Password. In this case, it is best to change the Network Name, change the Wireless Security Key, and click the Save button to the right of that. (Do not click either Save button until after you have made all the changes you want to make. Otherwise, you may inadvertently change the Network Name without changing the Wireless Security Key/Password or vice-versa. If that happens, you will have to set your unit to factory defaults, and start over.)
Now look for the new Network Name that you assigned in the cable modem router, and click or tap to select it. Click or tap Connect. When the device asks for a password, enter the new password. For Apple devices, it is connected when there is a check mark. For all other devices, it will tell you with the words Connected, Secured.
If you still see the old Network name on any of your devices, click or tap to highlight it, and then click or tap to Forget Network. (You may have to right click to bring up a menu with the option Forget Network).
